Radiation Safety Refresher Seminar

The annual Radiation Safety Refresher seminar was held Saturday March 28, 2009 at the Mountaineers Club in Seattle, WA. Thirty Seven radiographers, managers and Radiation Safety Officers from six Pacific Northwest firms attended this event. Nineteen were members of the local section. Participants came from Oregon, Canada and Eastern Washington.

Mr. Tom Davis, chairman of the Pacific Northwest Section of ASNT
Mr. Bruce Busby CHP Radiation Safety Officer of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center;
Mr. Randy Smith, Customer Training Manager, Ludlum Measurements Inc.
Mr. Steve Mathews, Radiation Health Physicist of the State of Washington Department of Health, Division of Radiation Protection
Mr. Emery E. Roberts, host and moderator for Radiation Jeopardy

Review of radiation principals and fundamentals was presented by Mr. Busby with additional information on the benefits, risks and biological effects of ionizing radiation. As always, Bruce's presentation was informative, well timed, informative and energitic. Mr. Mathews presented a training video produced by the NRC and the States perspective of recent radiographic mishaps. Mr. Smith presented information on Ludlum Instruments entry into the hi-tech and intrinsically safe survey meter market. There was ample free parking this year and a new facility for the Mountaineers Club at Magnuson Park (the old Sand Point NAS)
